What is changing?
The European Union is introducing two new systems that affect how non-EU travelers enter and exit the Schengen area:
ETIAS (before travel)
EES (at the border)
Understanding the difference is important if you are planning to study, travel, or participate in mobility programs in Europe.
ETIAS: Before you travel
ETIAS is a pre-travel authorization, similar to the US ESTA.
If you are from a visa-exempt country, you will need to:
apply online before your trip
pay a small fee
receive approval before boarding your flight or bus
Important:
ETIAS is not a visa
it does not guarantee entry
it is only for travelers who currently enter the EU without a visa
EES: At the border
EES (Entry/Exit System) is a biometric registration system.
When you arrive at the border, it will record:
your facial image
fingerprints
passport details
exact time of entry and exit
EES replaces passport stamping and helps monitor how long you stay in the EU.
Key difference
👉 ETIAS happens before your trip
👉 EES happens at the border
What does this mean for students?
If you are planning to study or participate in programmes in Europe:
You may need to complete an ETIAS application before travelling
Border procedures may take slightly longer due to biometric checks
You should plan your travel earlier and allow extra time
Important clarification
If you need a visa → nothing changes for you (no ETIAS required)
If you do not need a visa → you will need ETIAS
EU citizens do not need ETIAS or EES registration
